Teacher At School

A Memory of Chadderton.

Hi. My father was a teacher at the school. Mr Melling .
My name is john and I was born in 1959. I too went to this school. I live in Cornwall now and have been away from north England for some 35 years. I went back there for a nostalgic trip last year. I can't express how sad it was to see the north of England looking so sad! My old schools pulled down for modern biscuit box housing and street names in Oldham in foreign languages. I have a heavy heart when I see the heritage being neglected and then pulled down. Change isn't always better.

I went to Chadderton Grammar School for Boys on Chadderton Hall Road and left in 1969.
Since then I have been all over the world and returned to Oldham on a visit a couple of years ago.
Like you say, it was very sad to see the "improvements" and the boarded up shops and houses around Hill Stores.
My youngest son has decided to put roots down in Oldham and is a keen supporter of the "Latics" football team, what a shame they keep letting their supporters down but I think their last player who actually came from Oldham was Les Chapman (another Grammar School pupil).
I am searching for info and contacts from Chadderton Grammar School (for Boys), where I was a pupil from 1958-65 - I sent a recent photo of myself to an old school friend of me wearing what looks like the grammar school football shirt (dark blue and light blue quarters - alas, not a real one). However, I did play in the same school team as Les Chapman and saw him playing for Huddersfield against United at Old Trafford - I shouted out to him from the crowd and he looked up, recognised and acknowledged me. He retired a few years ago as kit man for City.
