More about this scene

The village used to be called Auldkirk, because the people of Greenock worshipped here until they built their own church at the end of the 16th century. In 1640 witch mania was rife throughout Scotland. The General Assembly instructed ministers to 'take notice of witches, charmers and all such abusers of the people'. Inverkip joined in the burnings, becoming a notorious centre for following the Bible's demand that, 'Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live'.
