For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

My maiden name was Rita Thomes, I was born in Railway Terrace, moved to Rheola, then to Penrhiwceiber Rd. We lived next door to Rosie's cafe, I was in Handels choir, and went dancing in the Gwalia, (Happy Days). My sister and her husband moved to Stoke on Trent where I met and married a man from there and also moved there - that was the second mistake. I have had a good life in Stoke but Penrhiwceiber is still my home ...see more
Hi Again, thank you for your memories regarding Penrhiwcieber Swimming Pool its great to read other people's memories, I would like to add when I was in Penrhiwceiber Juniors School the Head Master there was not very likeable fellow I can't remember his name. Being from Perthcelyn, when it was dinner time, out of school and run up the gully by the side of the school up past Penybryn and up the ...see more
My father was a coal hewer in the mine. His step brother was Con Collins, he lived up the mountain. I used to stay at his house all summer and play with all the local kids, his son was called Steven and brother, Jimmy. There was a big family all around Penrhiwceiber, aunties and uncles and cousins; sadly I was too young to know who was who. I would dearly love to know if anybody knows anything about them. ...see more
My father was colliery manager from 1964 - 1966. We lived in Penrhiwceiber House, the big house next to the Pit. It was a great place to be a kid. If anyone has any old photos of the house or Ceiber from the sixties I would appreciate a copy.
I was born Rita Maureen Thomas in Penrhiwceiber and lived there until I married in 1958, then moved to Stoke on Trent, most of my life I lived at 161 Penrhiwceiber Road. My father's name was John Rowe Thomas, my mother was Pheobe Thomas. I had two brothers who are now sadly dead, John and Cecil, my sister Ellen, known as Nellie lives about a mile from me. When I speak of home I mean Penrhiwceiber and I will be visiting ...see more
I have fond memories of growing up in the 'Ceiber'. My family lived on Penrhiwceiber road - the road was full of kids. We constantly played together, roamed over the disused colliery and up the nearby mountain. I left in 1963 at 15 and bit years old, to join the Navy. For a number of years I did visit, but over time I settled elsewhere. I felt that childhood there was never one of luxury but was rich ...see more
I used to live in Perthcelyn but now live in Station Terrace in the Ceiber and have done for 7 years, all my family are from here:)
My dad was born in Harcourt Terrace in Penrhiwceiber in 1910, his name was Wyndham Stephen Jones, he started in the mines then joined the Army. My grandad was also born there, as the rest of my Welsh family whom were coal miners. My grandad was Daniel Stephens Jones, he married Elizabeth Williams. I went there on holiday as a child and remember the railway line across the road and the Moors.
Looking on the left, just below 'Ceiber Hall' was a grocery shop, I think where the white blind is down, caled 'the Meadow Stores'. My brother Desmond James started work there as an errand boy delivering goods to the customers. He went on to become a manager with the same company in Mountain Ash, Oxford Street, then it became 'Lipton Stores'. He worked with the same company, retiring as a company director with Safeway supermarkets.
I am helping trace my brother-in-law's family tree and we have found his 2nd cousins were born in Penrhiwceiber. We are especially interested in George Henry Hall born 1881. We have found him living at 20 Station Terrace, Penrhiwceiber in the 1911 census with his wife Margaret and listed as a Coal Miner Hewer. We gather George was elected to Parliament in 1922. Does anyone have any information or can ...see more
