Tony's Handyman Centre has occupied this site since Woolworths moved into the Kingfisher Centre over 20 years ago. Currys, next door, is now occupied by a building society. Today Currys trades from an edge-of-town superstore in St Georges.

My late father, Bill Clements, always took me shopping on a Saturday morning and after hair cuts we would end up a Woollies for sweets and a matchbox toy before catching a bus home to webheath from the old bus station just down to the left of Woolworths.
I loved working at Woolies, I was on the sweet counter. Sometimes we would swap some choc for a few biscuits..naughty but nice. Mr Lee was the manager, bit of a tarter at times, but I liked him. I remember stock-taking as I almost missed my bus home to Studley a few times. We used to take these baskets on wheels up in the lift to get stock. Biscuits, as such, was one of my departments. Biscuits, hardware and haberdashery, (what the hell is haberdashery), I can't even remember now, sewing and such like I think. I remember the broken biscuits, I used to take home bags of Wagon Wheels. I have not been back to Redditch since 1960 and have this terrible yearning to do so, but people who are familiar with the current Redditch have warned me against it, saying I ...see more
When I was a little girl I remember my nan Parker and I would go into Woolworth's and buy the broken biscuits. Now days that would seem so trivial, but back then it was a luxury and I never knew anything different. I now live in Australia and seeing this photo has brought back so many lovely memories. Thank You.
