Dalton was growing quite rapidly in the 1960s, and there was the occasional need for the fire brigade. The firemen of Dalton were all volunteers.
The cross stands in front of Dalton Castle at the top of the town.
The two statues guarding the hospital entrance are James Watt, right, and John Dalton, left. The Dalton statue was a bronze copy of the marble one by Chantry that stands in the town hall entrance.
On the right-hand corner with Dalton Road is Saxone Shoes, now Thomas Cook.
Bus shelters, one with a shopper waiting, occupy Tudor Square, once called Bally Green, at the end of Market Street, which is Dalton's main shopping street.
This fine view shows Lancaster's new town hall, seen from Dalton Square.
At the centre of Dalton Square stands a bronze statue of Queen Victoria guarded by four lions, given to the city by Lord Ashton. He also donated the new Town Hall, which stands at the back.
The corpora- tion started making plans to move out of the old town hall as early as 1898, and bought a site in Dalton Square.
West Quay was always the visitors' favourite, with its ice cream shop, cafe, fresh fish shop and the Dalton Arms.
A vast 450-acre greenfield site at Dalton was acquired for the construction of the new works.
Among its treasures were copies of the Elgin Marbles, presented by George IV, and a statue of John Dalton in marble.
Calton Hill can be seen in the distance.
When this photograph was taken, the pantiled old forge at Thornton Dale on the A170 east of Pickering had already diversified into pottery, postcards and gifts, as well as the more traditional metalwork
The old Calton burial ground just beyond is where the philosopher David Hume is buried.
In the background on Calton Hill stands the unfinished monument to the Scottish dead of the Napoleonic Wars. The monument was started in 1822, but the money ran out and it was never completed.
