The Talbot Arms pub on the right hand side of the photograph has now been renamed the Tunnel Top because there is an air vent nearby for the canal tunnel that runs under the present-

The village of Pyle is situated north of Porthcawl just off the M4 between Bridgend and Port Talbot.
The town was built on the coal industry, as were many in South Wales; Porthcawl was a coal port in the 19th century, but it declined in the face of competition from Barry and Port Talbot.
Further east, Franklins Outfitters, a mid 19th-century Italianate building on the right has gone, as have those in the distance on the left, to be replaced by the tepid Neo-Georgian Talbot Court.
A corner of the 13th-century castle can be seen at the top right of the picture, though our main subject is the country house built by Thomas Mansel Talbot in the 1770s and its 19th-century additions.
The oriel window on the right is famous as an image captured in Fox Talbot's earliest surviving negative, taken in 1835.
Miss Matilda Talbot donated Lacock Abbey, together with most of the village, Manor Farm and Bewley Common, to the National Trust between 1944 and 1946.
