The obelisk seen in photograph No 33256 had been replaced by the Market Cross before the 1950s, and Broughton's shop was rebuilt in 1904; it is now the Trattoria Sorrento.
Castleton Terrace, near the camera, is still there; it is typical of the handsome rows lining the road to enjoy views of the Cave Hill and the Lough.
In the 19th century, a railway brought Brendon Hills iron ore here for shipment to Wales.
The statue is of the fourth Marquis of Downshire, the 11th descendant of the Hills of Hillsborough.
