More about this scene
About six years before this photograph was taken, designer Christopher Cockerell was turning a drawing board dream into reality with his invention of the hovercraft, a revolutionary new concept in passenger travel. The Suffolk boat builder took out 56 patents on the design and the first experimental hovercraft crossed the English Channel in 1959.
