More about this scene

Following the death of Sir Robert Gordon in 1847, his brother the Earl of Aberdeen suggested that Victoria and Albert might like to take over the lease on Balmoral. There was a problem. Though Victoria was Queen Empress of the greatest empire in history, she had little personal wealth. The money was found to purchase the estate, but plans to rebuild the castle looked in doubt. Then the Queen heard that she had been left £500,000 for her personal use in the will of the eccentric barrister John Camden Neild.
