Poldark's Cornwall

Poldark is back! Watching the wonderful new BBC series has prompted us to revisit Francis Frith's love affair with Poldark's Cornwall. Please enjoy some timeless images from The Francis Frith Collection of the gorgeous locations that are the real star of Winston Graham's tale.

Porthgwarra Cove, near Land's End, is featured in the BBC family drama.

Charlestown, The Harbour 1912
Charlestown is one of the key locations for the Poldark series. In this photograph we clearly see the process involved in loading or unloading ships. Cargo is off-loaded from and to horse-driven wagons along wooden gullies directly from and into the hold of the vessel.

Launceston, Castle Lodge 1906
The lodge was built in the 19th century to house the gardener, and is now the English Heritage information centre. Down the lane to the left, on the other side of the castle green, is Northgate and Doomsdale, the prison which included among its inmates the Catholic martyr St Cuthbert Mayne, the Quaker George Fox, and Winston Graham's character Ross Poldark.

Not in Cornwall of course, but Corsham is used in some of the market town scenes for the new BBC Poldark series.

Gunwalloe, Dollar Cove c.1960
Some of the BBC series of Poldark was filmed here in Dollar Cove, Gunwalloe, or in the adjacent Church Cove.
