Nostalgic memories of East Ham's local history

Share your own memories of East Ham and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

I have very good memories of EHTC Art Department. I did a 3 year graphic design diploma course there from 1966 to 1969. I was only 16 at the time and everything was new to me.It changed my way of thinking. The lecturers were very good as were the other students many whose names I still remember. At the of end of the 3 years age19 I qualified as general illustrator. Colin
My father Leonard Duffield was brought up in the family home at 52 St Bartholomews Road. His father and uncle owned and ran a wholesale and retail bakery business H & GS Duffield which had a shop in High Street South along with delivering to bakers shops across London. In late 1944 whist my dad was away in the army a V2 rocket destroyed the family home. Luckily the family were not at home ...see more
We moved into Nelson Street in 1989, it was a council house with old electrics. At night we use to freeze to death because the heating was so bad. It took us a long time to make it into a nice warm home. I use to love the neighbours, on one side we had a Sri Lankan Family and on the other a really kind family who gave me lots of their old toys that belonged to their son Kevin. I spent many happy years at that house ...see more

I haven't much of a memory as such because I was brought up in customhouse ..but on 23rd December 1944 my mum gave birth to me on Eastham Station. I never, all through my life knew of this until I enquired about a copy of my birth certificate, the Registrar said "I think you should have a full copy" and there it was written in black and white. Ii know its a long shot, but if anybody has heard in the past of anyone whether in ...see more
I went to Burgess Manor school between 1963-1967. I remember most of the Teachers but i wondered if anyone remembered Miss Pett. She was the English/Drama Teacher. I think of her as a bit of an enigma. She looked as though she had stepped out of the 1940's always wearing twin sets and pearls. Sometimes a tweed suite with a v-neck jacket where you could see the usual row of pearls. If anyone has ...see more

Hi yes I remember the smell from the Trebour factory it smelt of lovely sweets, that was in the 1950s when I went to school at shafsbury.
I was born at 138 Burgess Road in East Ham and remember a shop on the corner I used to frequent before school, Ottaways or something like like. I used to get 1 old pence to spend on sweets, either 8 black jacks or 8 fruit salads. I went to Altmore School and then onto Lathom before moving, as a lot of East End folk to Becontree. However I did spend two years living on the Barking Road where my parents run a Wavy ...see more
