The bathing pool seen here has been recently restored after suffering damage in the disastrous floods of 1953.
The camera is probably on London Bridge, looking downstream across a quieter Pool. To the right is Pickle Herring Quay and Hay's Dock.
At the centre are the public swimming baths housing two saltwater pools, the larger capable of hosting international water polo matches and, when boarded over, doubling as gymnasium.
Now it is a valuable habitat for wild birds, but before piped water came, this pool was a better water supply than some of the town wells.
Imported logs were stored in a pool before being taken inland, often to the mines.

Poole developed along the banks of the finest natural harbour in England.
The sign at the far end of the car park tells us that in the 1950s the hotel had a swimming pool.
Then, there were 36 boys, including 8 boarders, and the Headmaster was G J Poole, MA. By 1920, the head was the Rev Ernest Alfred Crewe Stowell, BA, and pupil numbers had risen to about 150.
It is a great place for those who like to scramble over rocks and paddle in pools. Those who prefer to sit and wait can do so at Ellison's Refreshment Rooms.
