I have such happy memories of Lakeside California. My Dad worked there every season for a few years. That's him in this photo wearing the white trunks his name was Ron and he was entertainments manager. I can remember fishing on the lake, dinner in the dining room which had a rowing boat in the middle of the room and the dance floor in the ballroom. I also remember going on morning rambles in the woods with other campers led by my dad.
My grandparents lived near californiaengland, and I remember going to watch the motor racing, it consisted of mini racing cars and also midiget cars, there was a large lake restaurant. Also a picnic area.
I remember going there pre 1959. My memory is a little train. It waited in a little station with a roof. My dad must have paid and then the train set off on quite a long journey past trees. Presently it arrived back at the station.
Dose anyone remember the Asker family from Binfield,John and Emma ,John my granddad was a jockey and worked for the Wilmotts his nickname was Darkie,their children were,John,Violet,Bill,George,Kathleen and Ken,uncle Ken was keen on motorbikes also heard about the chicken farm nearby and a family called Gibbs.
I also remember the Café on my way home to the Nine Mile Ride.
My grandfather's, brother was in the New Zealand Maori Contingent (Company A), an ex-Gallipoli Veteran, he died of sickness and is buried at St Sebastions Church, Plot 1, B3430 Nine Mile Road.
Yesterday, here in New Zealand, was ANZAC day. I was inspired to find Puaka's grave and tomb stone because I have located his other brother in France and have a picture. Fortunately for us, ...see more
We were the Clarks who lived at 'Cotswold' Nine Mile Ride, out of Wokingham. I would sit on our front gate with pencil and paper taking number plates of cars going past to California. My mother rode her bicycle to work in Wokingham, sometimes in icy tracks left by the bus which I caught to school. My friends were the Higgins children and the Mephans. I went to Westcott Rd school. I remember Martins swimmimg pool well, in Milton Road, Wokingham, just up from the Baptist Sunday school I went to. They had caves that the girls and boys changed in when they went with the school for swimming lessons,the cup of Bovril in the cafe and oxo flavoured crisps. The trolley buses didn't go as far as Wokingham, it would have been a ordinary double or single decker bus.
