More about this scene
Compare this view with the 1960s view A15142. Both photographs show the view looking east towards the Town Hall; apart from the cobbled street, the main difference is the loss of the Lion Hotel (left) itself a merger in 1866 of the King's Head Inn and the Lion Inn. These were 15th- and 16th-century timber-framed buildings with jetties and archways through their inn yards. It is very sad that the gabled bays on this side of the arch with the oriel bay window over it were demolished in the 1930s. Note the ornate gas street lamp on the right.
