Abingdon, The Checker Fireplace 1924

More about this scene
Inside the Checker is a remarkably fine fireplace with 13th-century carved stiff-leaved foliage capitals to the supporting columns. Unfortunately the stone chimney hood it supported has long gone. The flue terminates in the fireplace's famous and original chimney, which we can see in view 26992, and others: it has gables to each side with three stepped lancets allowing smoke to escape. The Checker and the upper floor of the old bakehouse are now occupied by the Unicorn Theatre, opened in 1953 - it has a version of a Shakespearian-period stage.
