More about this scene
Copper (and also, to a lesser degree, lead) have been mined here since Roman times, so that the whole area of hillside behind the town is said to have dozens of pits, caves and tunnels. One mine, opened in 1857, produced 4,000 tonnes of copper before it was exhausted only twenty years later. Today this area is covered in woodland, and has become a popular sport for walkers.
