More about this scene

Caption for Alton, the Ideal Cafe, Lower Village c1955: When W H N Nithersdale wrote his book on the Highlands of Staffordshire, he was impressed by the number of public houses in the village, all of which did a roaring trade during the summer months and at weekends. He should know: he was an inspector for the Inland Revenue.

Memories of Alton, the Ideal Cafe, Lower Village c1955

Mrs Worthington ran the shop and cafe. She sold some interesting bits and pieces besides sweets and ice cream. In the background is the pub run by the Parringtons. We often walked from home down to the cafe and treated ourselves to an ice cream in the summer. There were lots of walks around the area and so the cafe was popular with visitors.
