Eskdale Cumbria And Another Hectic Break

A Memory of Ambleside.

My son Matthew provided the opportunity to once again retrace our well worn steps around this beautiful county and in particular The Lake District. As is our norm it was non-stop driving and walking, although walking is now less attractive to me as old father time lessens my ability to trek as I once did. The "Striding Edge" and "Scafell Pike" just distant memories now as we shuffled around "Tarn Hows" and a breathless trek up the winding path to "Aira Force".
We picked a date in late spring this year when we were less likely to encounter the heavy summer visitor traffic and at the beginning of a beautiful four days spell of fine weather with uninterrupted sunshine, made our base camp in the "Woolpack Inn" at the westerly base of the "Hardknott and Wrynose Pass's". In fact negotiating the "pass's" is the highlight of of visits to the English Lakes, not just the challenge but the views, the silence, the totally unspoilt fells and heathland, where ever we travel in Cumbria it has to include a "pass". We have visited "The Lakes" on numerous occasions spread over forty years, my diary of visits goes back to the days when Donald Campbell was attempting, and later succeeded in breaking the water speed record on lakes Ullswater and Coniston. Our four days were non-stop as we ticked off our targeted wish list of places to see and as is usual we found new and undiscovered places and roads to investigate. Another fantastic break here's to the next visit
