More about this scene
The steep roofs and gables in the Dutch style overlook a hive of activity in this street scene. The mass of Union Jacks indicates another Royal celebration: this was for the accession of George VI, who was crowned in 1937. In the days before TV advertising, every shop blind played its part in announcing the shop proprietor and his speciality. 'Service with a smile' is evident as the delivery boy sets off on his delivery bike from the premises of Mr Bridge.
