More about this scene
King Henry III gave a charter to the town in 1219, and renewed it in 1242, confirming the right to hold a market on Thursdays. The practise prevails into the 21st century, although the site has moved from the Market Place to the car park of a local supermarket. The bunting and flags visible in this photograph suggest that it might have been taken in Coronation Year, 1953.
