Arundel, Castle And Bridge 1902

More about this scene

The castle, much enlarged by the Dukes of Norfolk, along with their Roman Catholic cathedral, dominates this picturesque hill town, giving it a distinctly French character in distant views. The bridge over the River Arun was replaced by the present stone parapeted one in 1935. On the right are the ruins of the Maison Dieu of about 1400, possibly a small monastic house dissolved by Henry VIII in 1546.

A Selection of Memories from Arundel

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our website to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was, prompted by the photographs in our archive. Here are some from Arundel

Sparked a Memory for you?

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

This is my Grandfather Joseph Smith and my two Great Aunts, Kathleen and Josephine. He was about 12 in this picture. They lived yards from where this was taken in the lodge at Arundel Park gates. My great Grandfather, William, was a groom to the then Duke of Norfolk (Henry) and Great Granmother, Kate, was a domestic. I have spent many happy times in Arundel and continue to visit.
