More about this scene
Audley End, just outside Saffron Walden, was built in 1603-16 for Thomas Howard, 1st Earl of Suffolk. He ruined himself by spending public funds on the house - hardly surprising, since the bill came to £190,000. It cost £500 alone to obtain the preliminary designs from Italy.
