The Avebury stone circle is the largest henge monument in Britain. A later excavation of the great ditch was carried out by H St George Gray in 1922, when he established that Avebury was built in the Neolithic age. Flint tools, pottery fragments, human and animal bones and deer antlers (used as picks) were found.
