Avebury, Silbury Hill 1902

More about this scene
Silbury Hill, near Marlborough, is the largest man-made mound in Europe. It was once thought (justifiably at that time) to be a large burial mound for an important Bronze Age chieftain. Excavations, however, have revealed nothing of particular interest, other than the fact that it was started in August - the foundations revealed evidence of flying ants! It predates the Roman road, now the A4, whose early track can be seen in the photograph. In 1883 it was the first site in Britain to be classified as an ancient monument.
