On this section of the Kennet & Avon Canal, the river Avon is crossed twice. This aqueduct at Avoncliffe is the first. Although the infrastructure is essentially unchanged, much tidying up of both bank and water has taken place in recent years.

Memories of Avoncliff, the Aqueduct c1950

My dad was born in the house shown in the photograph; along with ten other brothers and sisters. My grandfather was the bailiff on the river, it has not changed one bit .

It must have been around the late 1960s, early 1970s when my sister and I used to ride our ponies down to Avoncliff. We lived a short distance away in Upper Westwood and our mother liked us to ride along the tow path as it kept us away from the roads and any traffic that may spook our ponies.  Avoncliff was a favourite place - at that time the aqueduct was dry and instead of going down and under the bridge ...see more
