Water flows through the village from Semerwater 2 miles away, via the country's shortest river, the Bain. Here, next to the Ure, are mill cottages. Around the charming green we can see the old school (centre), later a billiard hall, now restored as a private house. Behind are High Hall and the Temperance Hall (1910). The Quaker Meeting House came in 1836, and next is Summerfield House, formerly an inn. Finally, on the right is the Wesleyan chapel of 1836. The bridge over the Ure was widened by John Carr in 1785.
