Bedworth 1965 1968
A Memory of Bedworth.
In Sept 1965 I went to Bedworth to my first teaching post which was in Hob Lane C of E Infants School with Mrs Dorothy Pye as the headteacher . It was a very old building which had apparently been a ribbon factory. Staff & pupils had outside toilets and the four classrooms had their own coke-burning stoves. It was a very happy school and I loved my time there. The children were very appreciative of anything done for them and I expect a lot of them are now grandparents.
The one thing I remember noticing first in Bedworth was the smell in the air of burning coke which a lot of people must have used in their homes. There were some very individual and interesting shops and a thriving market. A lot of the very old red brick buildings were being demolished when I was there but Bedworth still had character. I remember one of the first supermarkets appearing called "The Man with The Axe"!! Many years later I visited Bedworth and couldn't believe what had been done to it in the name of progress. It's heart had been ripped out.
