More about this scene
There has been a fortress here since Norman times, though the present structure dates from 1613. It was built by Sir Charles Cavendish, who is said to have inherited his love of building from his mother, Bess of Hardwick. Though it looks like a fortress, Bolsover is in fact a magnificent stately home and of little military value.
