More about this scene
The majestic ruins are situated near a sweeping bend of the River Wharfe. The abbey has been a popular attraction for painters for many years, including Landseer and Turner. The priory was founded in the 12th century, and building continued right up to the Dissolution. The nave survived and was later used as the parish church; during the 19th century the refectory was used as a free school.
