More about this scene

St Julitta's was restored in 1871-72 after the ruined church was drawn and planned by the author Thomas Hardy. The nave became the north aisle during the rebuiding, while the granite-built south aisle (seen here) became the nave and chancel, so it is offset from the tower. The church stands entirely on its own, overlooking the Valency valley two miles from Boscastle harbour. It was here that Hardy met his first wife Emma, who was Rev Caddell Holder's sister-in-law. There are memorials to all three.
