The pier opened on 28 July 1889, three years after the Boscombe Pier Company had been formed. The local council took over the structure in 1904, at which time Southbourne pier (1888-1907) still existed, a pier they had declined to purchase. In 1905 the council erected both entrance and pierhead buildings.
