More about this scene
Lee Lane (left) at its junction with Dorchester Road, has a stone commemorating the escape of King Charles II after being defeated at the Battle of Worcester. He had a close call in Bridport on 23 September 1651. Erected in 1901, it quotes Thomas Fuller of Broadwindsor: "When midst your fiercest foes on every side, for your escape God did a lane provide." Twenty-one days later, Charles would reach Shoreham, Sussex, and sail to safety in France. The bulge on the horizon (right) is a hayrick.
