More about this scene
This is St Mary's Parish Church, seen from the north-west, showing the two bays of the nave and aisles extended in 1860 (right). The next four bays are from the previous extensions in the 15th century, when the central tower was also rebuilt, and the newel staircase added. It is set into the north-west wall of the surviving 13th-century transept of the original medieval design. The Victorian restoration began in 1859 and was carried out by ecclesiastical architect John Hicks of Dorchester, whose assistant draughtsman at this time was the young novelist Thomas Hardy.
