Nostalgic memories of Brixton's local history

Share your own memories of Brixton and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

I grew up in the 1950s/60s in this area and well remember the local picture houses and Saturday matinees - watched 'Sink the Bismark ' when it first showed. Mum used to take me round the market then the big stores and for tea and biscuits in Lyons Cafe on the High St. Used to love going in the Co-op behind the town hall, loved the lifts and the funny old money machine they used; mum went for her ...see more
I was bought up in Brixton, Water Lane - have very happy memories. I remember going to Brixton market with my nan, she would meet her sister for a drink in the pub, Prince Albert. I would wait outside with my crisps and lemonade, then she would take me into Walworth and buy me sweets. I used to love going to Saturday morning pictures with my best friend who lived next door in Trent Road. I went to Parkside ...see more
Does anyone remember the Record Shop in Landor Road called The Beat Goes On. My husband and I opened this shop around 1976 and we were there for a couple of years. It was opposite the well known bakery in that road. Down the road was a grren grocers, and up the road was a camping shop. The man from the greengrocers was called David. The man from the camping shop used to come to our shop quite a lot. ...see more
Does anyone remember the old ice cream vans that served Plato Road, Solon Road areas off the Acre Lane, Brixton? I have an uncanny and I'm sure not a healthy memory of remembering registration numbers from vehicles from years ago. We were well served by ice cream manufacturers in the mid 1950s and 1960s. Does anyone remember Ramona, he had a blue and white bedford van MCA 682 and owned the Ramona cafe near Railton ...see more
I was born in coronation year 1953 at the Annie McCaul Hospital in Jeffreys Road, Clapham. I grew up at 20 Plato Road, just off the Acre Lane in Brixton in the 50s and early 60s. What a fantastic time it was. I fondly remember it with great affection as the golden era when Brixton was Brixton. My cousin also lived in Plato Road, further down the street, how we looked forward to Saturday morning. We ...see more
I worked further down the road in BHS at this time as a Saturday girl. I thought it was great and earned about £1 which bought my dinner and stockings and bus fare and I still had money in my pocket.
My grandparents lived opposite the town hall and whenever my younger brother and myself stayed with them the town hall bells used to keep us awake. The clock used to chime every quarter and of course the full chimes on the hour. Oh what memories of Daisy Dormer Court where they lived. I went to infant school in Santley St off the Acre Lane, and lived in Tintern St. Oh such happy memories of times gone by.
My brother and I and friends would all go to the Palladium, we would watch Cowboy and Indian films and we would all boo when the Indians came on. We also saw great cartoons. I think we payed 6 pence. We all sang the Saturday morning song "We are the Boys and Girls " ... and I can't rememember the rest of the words. All I know is I loved going, I would look forward to Saturday morning.
