More about this scene
This lovely building is at the southern end of the High Street, in the former market place where the High Street meets Worcester Road and St John's Street. The scaffolding is there because the rest of the building has just been pulled down. Photographs taken before 1965 reveal it to have been a truly magnificent structure; documentary records indicate that it was built about 1600, though its predecessors can be tracked back as far as 1460. Together with the surviving building, it was known as Appleby's Corner, after the ironmonger who occupied it for many years.
