More about this scene
The main A59 road from Liverpool to Preston runs through the centre of the village, and at the far end, rises over the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. The waterway arrived in 1755, encouraging rapid expansion and the establishment of new industries. A second boost came 100 years later when the railway was built. Its bridge lies just behind the photographer.
