The arch is not the genuine article: it is in fact a folly built by one Miss Elizabeth Morgan in 1820, using stone recovered from the remains of Roman buildings. The priory, which we can see through the arch, was built in about 1179, and is currently a hotel.

Our family moved to Brook Cottage, Llandegveth, in about 1945 when Dad went to work for Mr Joe Shepherd at Ty Capten Farm, and my three brothers, Arthur, David Noel and I would catch the canvas covered charabanc (bus) to Caerleon school. This picture of Ashwell Ref 32643 (Caerleon Old Village) is of 'The Vines'.
My grandparents David Charles and Winifred Ethel Jenkins lived there during the 1940's/50's. I myself was born at 1A Ashwell Villas (not built when this 'photo was taken).
