Overlooking the square is an arched gatehouse, built in the 14th century as a defence against Scottish raiders. It also served as the manorial courthouse but, during the 17th and 18th centuries housed a grammar school and later served as a general store. The gatehouse and the nearby church are all that remain of Cartmel's 12th-century Augustinian priory.
