More about this scene
The present Castle Rushen dates from the 12th to the 14th centuries. It was here in 1265 that Magnus, last of Man's Norse kings, died. With his death began nearly seventy years of Scottish rule until the island was taken by Edward III of England. The Doric column was erected as a memorial to Colonel Cornelious Smelt who was Lieutenant-Governor of the island between 1805-32.
