Charlwood, Recreation Ground 1904

More about this scene
Back at the Victorian eastern end of the village, the photographer looks north-east across the Recreation Ground, where mothers and children are enjoying the summer afternoon. The house to the left is an 1850s villa named Charlwood House, not to be confused with the 15th-century timber-framed one south of Gatwick Airport's perimeter fence. The Rising Sun is hidden by trees beyond the notice board, while the 1890s gabled house on the right, The Chestnuts, survives today. A Tour of Central and East Sussex
