More about this scene
In 1506 the Archduke Phillip of Austria and his wife, the Spanish Infanta Joanna, were brought to Charminster after being cast ashore on the Dorset coast. Their local interpreter John Russell made such an impression on the royal couple that they took him to the court of Henry VII, where he became a leading courtier. Henry VIII awarded Russell Woburn Abbey as a reward for service, and his descendants became Dukes of Bedford.
