St Mary's was never built to be a cathedral: until 1914 it was simply the parish church. A major rebuilding occurred in the 15th century, and much of the present structure dates from that time. The triangular tomb in the foreground commemorates “three unfortunate females” who died in a fire in the High Street in 1808.
