The pub in the foreground is the Railway Tavern. A previous landlady, it is said, would only serve people who looked like railwaymen. We are, indeed, opposite the station here. Behind the trees is the Friends' Meeting House (built 1824). The tall chimney belongs to Wells & Perry's Chelmsford Brewery.
