More about this scene
It is sale time in Chester, with perhaps the chance to pick up the odd bargain or two. Prices in general were falling back to their pre-Great War levels, having risen dramatically during the conflict. For example, a pound of streaky bacon cost 1s 3d in 1914 and 2s 7d in 1920, but by 1933 had fallen back to 1s 5d. Similarly, butter was 1s 3d in 1914, 2s 11d in 1920 and 1s 2d in 1933.
