More about this scene
The building in the corner on the left before The Causeway starts, left, was occupied by John Coles, who opened in the 1870s as a chemist and grocer. He produced his own medicines and invalid wines and useful domestic products such as insect powders and furniture polish. John Coles was a key figure in the provision of education in Chippenham. A brass plaque on the wall in the old block of the technical college commemorates his 21 years as Chairman of the Governing Body for Secondary and Technical Education.
