Part Of My Family History!

A Memory of Chipping Norton.

Frederick Sole was my maternal grandfather - to find a photo of this era online is amazing. When he retired in his 70s the shop was taken over by one of his old 'Saturday boys' and is still in those safe hands now, so it feels as if my grandfather is still alive in spirit in 1 Market St.

I was a pupil at Holy Trinity RC Primary School in Chipping Norton in the 1950s. Once a week Jesuit students came from Heythrop College to take the boys for football or cricket.
Freddie Sole’s racehorses had to be cleared off the large field at the side of Holy Trinity RC Church to allow sport to take place.
I can recall that in the early 1950s rationing of some supplies still existed but adequate food was normally obtained from the local butchers, Freddie Sole, on Market Street.
I can recall playing with Derek Sole who was in my class and also helping him feed the family chickens.
