A castle was built here after the Conquest. A 'chipping' (market) soon grew up outside the gates. This view shows the King's Head, which bears the date 1697. Ongar was an important staging-post for carriers, passenger-coaches and wagons. In 1717, the town's first postmaster was earning a yearly salary of £25.
