More about this scene
When a new rector came to Chipstead's church of St Margaret in 1809, he got something of a shock. It had become quite dilapidated and very unholy indeed. Local cricketers were even using it as a pavilion, drinking beer while notching the runs into the wood of the altar. However, the rector turned things around: he did much of the restoration work himself, and stayed here for the next 50 years.
