When a new rector came to Chipstead's church of St Margaret in 1809, he got something of a shock. It had become quite dilapidated and very unholy indeed. Local cricketers were even using it as a pavilion, drinking beer while notching the runs into the wood of the altar. However, the rector turned things around: he did much of the restoration work himself, and stayed here for the next 50 years.

I am writing this on our 39th wedding anniversary, which brings back happy memories of St Margaret's Church, where we married in 1975. We were so worried about the then vicar, who had a terrible stammer. In our meetings before the wedding, he could barely finish a sentence without stuttering. What would the service be like?
