More about this scene

At the time of this photograph, it appeared that the canal network was moving towards a final decline. However, the owners were justified in their optimism; for the Grand Union Canal and the River Chess, although they see little commercial traffic, are popular with pleasure craft owners. The well-kept towpath and the sympathetic cottage extension we see here blend into the countryside, and in 1960 were prepared for the resurrection of Hertfordshire's waterways.

A Selection of Memories from Chorleywood

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our website to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was, prompted by the photographs in our archive. Here are some from Chorleywood

Sparked a Memory for you?

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

I was born in Mill End, Rickmansworth in 1950 and have no idea what church this is a photo of. I went to infant school in Shepherds' Lane, Mill End opposite St. Peters' and it isn't that. I then went to Ricky Grammar School in 1961, in Croxley Green and opposite was All Saints' and it isn't that. Is it at the back of Our Lady Helper of Christians, near the Fortune Green at the bottom of Scots' Hill?
