Chorleywood, Christ Church And School 1959

More about this scene

In the foreground is the church primary school, parts of which date back to 1853, now much extended. The church is the second one on the site, the first having been built in 1845, the year Chorleywood became a separate parish. This proved inadequate and in 1869 G E Street buttressed and raised the tower, added a spire and rebuilt the rest of the church we see now. The lychgate dates from 1920 and the car park is more extensive nowadays.

A Selection of Memories from Chorleywood

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our website to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was, prompted by the photographs in our archive. Here are some from Chorleywood

Sparked a Memory for you?

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

I was born in Mill End, Rickmansworth in 1950 and have no idea what church this is a photo of. I went to infant school in Shepherds' Lane, Mill End opposite St. Peters' and it isn't that. I then went to Ricky Grammar School in 1961, in Croxley Green and opposite was All Saints' and it isn't that. Is it at the back of Our Lady Helper of Christians, near the Fortune Green at the bottom of Scots' Hill?
